Media, a Sandwich, and the Bachelor

Last night, as I sat watching the news and eating my *soy* turkey and provolone cheese sandwich, I must say I was a bit disgusted. People (my mother) wonder how I could possibly claim to, (dare I say it??) *not watch the news.*

“That’s absurd!” they say…”don’t you want to know what’s going on in the world?”

The thing is, we all know how the media portrays this life. It’s a constant instilment of fear into the hearts and minds of all who take part. Yesterday’s news was like every day’s news.

“Philadelphia’s crime rate is skyrocketing…”
“Man found dead…”
“Lady found dead…”
“Another man found dead…”

It goes on. And it’s depressing.

I agree that it’s important to know what’s going on in this world; the truth if ever we are so fortunate to get that “correct” information. But while the truth is what I seek, I refuse to believe that it can be found in watching reports of death, death, and more death. The violence that is taking place all over the city of Philadelphia is very real. However, is it beneficial to watch a broadcast that reports ONLY that? For certain there are more events of interest occurring. And maybe if we didn’t sit and watch reports about violence, we wouldn’t think so much to commit these acts of violence.

“Either way” I thought, “there must be a better use of time.”

And so, instead of sitting and feeling ill at the report of one more life lost to the nonsense that we like to call “gun violence”, I got up, walked over to my little television, and turned to the only other static-free channel. Guess what I had to resort to watching?

No really…. Guess.

The Bachelor. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, I found myself waiting to hear which lucky little lady (read idiotic moron of a woman) would get a rose from her bachelor.

So if you are looking for the moral of this story, there really isn’t one.

However since you are so inclined to beg, I conclude the following…

  1. Guns are bad
  2. I am as dumb as the women ON the bachelor for actually WATCHING the Bachelor.
  3. I think Kamau ate a piece of my sandwich when I wasn’t looking.

    Thank You. and Good day.
